Student Goes Green To Get To France

BIRMINGHAM (WWJ) - A little creative recycling while raising cash for a class trip -- that's the goal for 16-year old Groves High School junior who is turning old gift cards and hotel key cards into guitar picks.

Alicia Lerner said she's trying to raise enough money to visit Europe with her classmates.

"My French class, every two years they take a trip to France. So, I'm so excited to go on the trip but it is expensive," said Lerner. "My parents said I have to fundraiser, and this is how I'm doing it."

So, was it hard to part with her gift card collection?

"I mean, it was kid of sad. But it was cool seeing them like, into something useful instead of just a stack, like on my desk," Lerner said.
