DETROIT (WWJ) – The Detroit Police Dive Team is expected to resume the search Thursday morning for a Garden City man who fell into the Detroit River, Wednesday afternoon, while working on a painting project on the Ambassador Bridge.
Detroit Police Inspector Don Johnson says he’s not clear what exactly caused the man’s fall from the bridge into the Detroit River, but co-worker witnesses were helpful in their search.
“Based on the information that we have received from the witnesses, they pretty much gave us a good area to start conducting our search for him,” says Johnson.
He says the worker – 27-year-old Kent Morton from Garden City – tried to swim to safety but was overtaken by the current and was spotted in the water about a quarter mile away minutes later. Johnson says they are using side scan sonar equipment to search underwater.
Morton worked for Livonia-based Seaway Painting, a company doing contracting work on the bridge.
