Retired Bomb-Sniffing Dog Runs Loose At Metro Airport

ROMULUS (WWJ) - A retired bomb sniffing  German Shepherd has been caught after running loose for hours at Detroit Metro Airport.

Officials said Arco, a retired White House dog, just arrived at Metro Airport from Tucson, Ariz., Monday night.  When Continental Cargo workers let the dog out of his crate to go to the bathroom, he ran off.

The dog's owner, Nadine Karsevar, said Arco ran for about five hours in view of rescue crews, but when approached -- he bolted.  "Apparently, I guess he had his collar on and his leash, and they said he slipped his collar, which, that's really amazing; he's never done that," Karsevar said.

Karsevar told WWJ Newsradio 950 he was caught early Tuesday afternoon and was OK.

Metro Airport Spokesman Mike Conway said Romulus police were handling the situation because Continental Cargo is not on airport property. Conway said an airport officer was bit on the hand.

Karsevar runs a foundation that rehabilitates dogs and places them with army veterans or their families to live out their days. Arco is 6 years old. He was retired by Capitol Police after killing a cat and was on his way to a new home in Michigan.

There were no immediate details as to how or where the dog was finally captured.
