Detroit Tigers Roster Report 2-1-12

Detroit, six wins shy of its World Series championship goal last season, made a big, bold play to take those last steps with the out-of-nowhere signing of 1B Prince Fielder to a nine-year, $214 million deal as the response to DH Victor Martinez's season-ending left knee injury. That meant a reshuffling of the lineup, with 1B Miguel Cabrera agreeing to shift back to third, although given manager Jim Leyland's proclivity to lineup tinkering, there will be modifications. What previously had been hoped to be a sleepy offseason was highlighted by the addition of free agents RHP Octavio Dotel and backup C Gerald Laird.
