Tigers Fans Excited As Spring Training Begins

DETROIT (WWJ) - It's a sure sign that spring is just around the corner. The Detroit Tigers are holding their first full workouts for pitchers and catchers Monday in Lakeland, Florida.

"I say it every year, but it's true there's nothing better than the start of a baseball season. And this year with the Tigers, with all that's gone on the last couple of weeks, it makes it especially exciting," says Tigers broadcaster Dan Dickerson.

Dickerson says the addition of free agent Prince Fielder will make the Tigers the team to beat in the American League this season.

"It was a stunner...," says Dickerson.

And he adds,"... I still think of it everyday and go 'Wow, Cabrera and Fielder back-to-back in this line-up.' It's really something to think about."

Dickerson says if you're planning to head to Lakeland to catch a spring training game, make sure you get your tickets early because there's sure to be a big demand.

"It's not normal they would sell out every game because that ballpark does hold 9,000. But there are going to be a lot of days - if it's sunny and 80 - you're going to get huge walk-ups and that's when you're going to get the big crowds, in addition to ones that are already selling out or near sell-outs. But think of those, maybe, midweek games and definitely plan ahead because I do think the demand is going to be a lot higher. I don't think there's any question," he says.

Opening day at Comerica Park is April 5th with the Detroit Tigers facing off against the Boston Red Sox.
