Effort To Recall Troy Mayor Moves Ahead

TROY (WWJ) - Oakland County's Election Commission has approved language in one of two recall petitions submitted in an effort to remove Troy Mayor Janice Daniels.

The petitions were filed by people angry about a comment she made about gays, as well as her vote against a new transit project.

Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Daniels said she's concentrating on her job and not the recall efforts.

"I'm not going to comment on that. I'm actually going to focus on keeping low taxes and fiscally sound policies in the city of Troy," she said. "That's what my job is and that's what I'm gonna do."

Daniels can appeal the decision in circuit court.

The second recall petition's language was rejected two to one. That version listed additional reasons for the recall.

Recall supporter Matthew Binkowski said one of those issue focused on the Mayor's comments to high school students preparing a presentation on bullying. "She told them that she would bring in a psychiatrist that would say that the homosexual lifestyle is dangerous," he said.

Another reason listed was the Mayor's refusal to swear that she would uphold the city's charter, which Binkowski said Daniel's called a "whimsical" document.
