890-Pound Female Looking For Love

ROYAL OAK (WWJ) - "10' tall, 890 lbs.  Enjoys deep dives for raw fish and long walks in sub-zero weather.  Looking for someone with like interests to start a family."

Big love may be blooming in the Circle of Life polar bear exhibit at the Detroit Zoo.

Bob Lessnau, curator of mammals at the zoo has worked for several years to find just the right mate for Talini - one of the zoo's female polar bears.

A male polar bear was found for Talini two years ago, but she snubbed him after he became a little too aggressive for her taste.

Back at the drawing board, Lessnau and his staff poured over compatibility charts from other zoos with polar bears.  Finally they found Nuka at the Pittsburg Zoo and thought he'd be just the right mate for Talini.

Lessnau told WWJ's Marie Osborne it looks like a match.  "The two are always together, swimming and playing," he said.

Although that's great news, Lessnau said they want the friendship to bloom into something more so the pair can become parents.

Just like with humans, there's no way to force a relationship and the zoo staff can only watch anxiously for the signs of successful mating.  If all goes well there could be polar bear cub at the zoo come November or December.

Due to the decline of polar bears in captivity, a birth would be international news.
