4 Boaters Missing On Lake Erie

LORIAN, Ohio (WWJ) - The U.S. Coast Guard is searching Lake Erie for four missing boaters.

Rescue teams were looking for any sign of the vessel reported to be in distress Wednesday night between Lorain, Ohio and Vermilion, Ohio.

Coast Guard Petty Officer First Class Lauren Jorgensen said that, just before midnight, a pilot flying in the area, which is between Cleveland and Cedar Point, spotted the boaters in the water with life jackets on and rescue beacons flashing.

The pilot wasn't ale to fly low enough, however, to see much else.

"He reported that it was about six miles off shore. So, not a huge distance off shore," Jorgensen told WWJ Newsradio 950. "But, again, because he wasn't able to get any additional information, we don't know who owns the vessel - even, specifically, what type of vessel it is, where it might have come from, if there were additional people on board," she said.

Coast Guard teams from Detroit and Buffalo, N.Y. are assisting along with along with the Royal Canadian Air Force.
