DEARBORN (WWJ/AP) – An exhibition focused on the Titanic has opened at Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn as the 100th anniversary of the ship’s sinking approaches.

The museum will host “Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition” from Saturday through Sept. 30. The touring exhibition includes more than 300 artifacts. Visitors to the museum in Dearborn also will learn about passengers on board the ship who had ties to Michigan.

“We’ll have artifacts that have never been displayed and sort of gathered together like this before,” said Tom Varitek, Senior Program Manager at the Henry Ford.”

“One of the things that we’re really happy to have in this exhibit is a complete replica of the grand staircase that, especially if you’ve seen the movie Titanic, we’ve got that replica that will be in this exhibit. It’s a great photo-op for families as they come in,” he said.

On April 14, a special “Titanic Remembered” anniversary event at the museum will include champagne, dinner and access to the exhibition.

The Titanic sank in the North Atlantic on April 15, 1912, while making its maiden voyage. More than 1,500 passengers and crew died.

Admission to both Titanic Exhibition and Henry Ford Museum is $27 for adults, $22.50 for youth, $25 for seniors and free for children 4 and under. For more information, visit www.thehenryford.org orwww.titanicdetroit.com.
