Detroit Tigers Notes, Quotes 5-10-12

--LHP Drew Smyly turned in his fifth consecutive strong six-inning start Wednesday night in Seattle. Smyly allowed just two hits -- but both came in the fourth inning for the only run the rookie allowed. Smyly, 1-0, has made six starts in the majors and allowed seven runs (one unearned). He works inside and out with a low 90s fastball, then flashes an excellent curve and changeup. He had five strikes after three straight games of seven. "We're going to hit," Smyly said. "My goodness, look at the names in that lineup." "People talk about his poise," manager Jim Leyland said, "but he's got good stuff."

-RHP Luke Putkonen made his second major league appearance Wednesday night and picked up his first defeat. Putkonen, who debuted April 29, worked a perfect seventh but yielded a leadoff double to start the eighth and that became Seattle's winning run. Putkonen showed promise, though, with a mid-90s fastball and a very sharp curve that makes him the typical Detroit power bullpen arm. "I thought Putkonen threw well, outstanding," manager Jim Leyland said. "I thought Putkonen was very impressive."
