Smoke Seen For Miles As Fire Burns At Transmission And Engine Valve Spring Shop

TROY (WWJ) – Shoppers coming out of Oakland Mall could see smoke early Saturday afternoon from a fire nearby at American MSC on Elliot off of 14 Mile Road. Kevin Cribbs was working inside the company when it started.

“I turned off the oven and debris was coming through the stack … I don’t know what it was but it kept falling down, so we tried to spray to get it out – and the stack was red, and we called 911,” said Cribbs.

American MSC makes transmission and engine valve springs using an oven.

Cribbs says everyone got out safely. The company makes transmission and engine valve springs — and an oven is used in that process. Fire investigators believe the fire started with that oven.

No word on a damage estimate.
