4 Hurt, Child Critical In Suspected Distracted Driving Crash

LIVONIA (WWJ) - Two young sisters, a mother and grandmother are hospitalized following an accident on I-96 near Levan Road in Livonia.

Police said the Canton Township family was in a car that was slowed down in the westbound lanes because of another rollover accident near Newburgh Road. Another car slammed into the back of them.

The two little girls, ages 5 and 6, were taken to Botsford Hospital and transferred to Beaumont. The 6-year-old was reported in critical condition on Tuesday. The other girl was stable.

Police said the driver who slammed into the back of the car said he was distracted and looked away when his cell phone rang. By the time he looked up traffic was slowed and he couldn't stop in time. He had minor injuries.

The accident happened late Monday night. The freeway was shut down at Levan until 2 a.m. Tuesday but has since reopened.

An investigation is ongoing.
