Local Pompon Team Prepares For London

DETROIT(WWJ)- Teenage girls across southeast Michigan are perfecting the details of their upcoming performance with Mid American Pompon.

Their destination? The 2012 Olympics in London.

About 70 girls from Northville, Novi, Livonia and Farmington will perform as a part of the Olympic opening ceremonies.

Julie Hobbs-Julian, the coach and director of the club's all-star team, said the performance is a big step for the girls.

"It's pretty huge,  this is the first international thing we've ever done," she said.

Team member Danielle Unrein said the girls all will be dressed identically for the performance.

"(We'll all wear) bright red lipstick," she said. "We have to do a certain type of bun so everybody's hair looks the same, and socks that come up to our knees so when we kick you don't see any skin on our legs."

Unrein said performing with the league, which specializes in a Michigan-only style of pompon, is a very big deal to her.
