Niowave Hosts 85 Scientists from Around the World

LANSING -- On Saturday, June 23, Niowave Inc. hosted 85 particle accelerator scientists from around the world at its Lansing headquarters. The scientists are attending the two week long United States Particle Accelerator School, which offers accredited graduate level courses in the accelerator sciences not otherwise offered at universities.

The attendees were hosted at Niowave in the afternoon, a visit highlighted by a tour of the Niowave's accelerator research center that houses the only operational superconducting particle accelerator outside of a national laboratory in the world.

Niowave President Terry Grimm, who attended USPAS in the 1990s, remarked: "This program helped me early in my career, and gave me some ideas that later led to forming Niowave ... As Niowave continues to expand to meet the growing commercial applications of superconducting accelerators, we hope this exposure to industrial opportunities inspires some of these exceptional scientists to join us."

USPAS began in 1981 as a one day addition to annual conferences, and started offering credit courses in 1987. It is governed by an 11-member consortium comprised of seven national laboratories of the Office of Science of the Department of Energy, two national laboratories of the National Nuclear Security Agency of DOE, and two National Science Foundation university laboratories.

Niowave is a leader in superconducting accelerators. Named the 2010 Small Business of the Year for the Department of Energy, Niowave is the only company in the world operating a superconducting accelerator in its own building. Formed in 2006 to commercialize superconducting accelerators, Niowave is currently expanding to meet the growing commercial needs of this technology. It plans a July 3 dedication of a new Free Electron Laser & Medical Radio-isotope addition to its Lansing headquarters, a converted elementary school.
