NFL In Awe Of Calvin
By: Jamie Samuelsen
Lions fans all know how good Calvin Johnson is. They've known it for quite a while. But last season, it seemed like the rest of the country finally caught on.
Johnson led the league with 1681 yards receiving. He caught 16 touchdowns even though he was often double and sometimes triple-teamed. He was the number one reason that Matthew Stafford threw for over 5000 yards and he was the number one reason that the Lions earned their first playoff berth in over a decade. In short, he went from being a great player to being an NFL superstar.
As a result, he landed on the cover of Madden 2012. He got a national car commercial. And he moved from #21 to #3 in the NFL Network's rundown of the top 100 players in the game. That's right – the NFL players think that a Lion is the third best player in the league behind only the Packers Aaron Rodgers and the Saints Drew Brees. And if that's not honor enough, check out the video that profiles Calvin after his monster season. It's amazing to see guys like Ronde Barber, Larry Fitzgerald and Brandon Flowers talk about Calvin with awe. It's like they're talking about a super hero.
Calvin Johnson may have been underrated and underappreciated prior to the 2011 season. But that's not the case anymore.
