WAYNE (WWJ) - A local church plans to ‘WOW’ the community in hopes of easing the effects of ongoing unemployment, recession and foreclosures.

Cornerstone City Church is hosting WOW-Jam, a free event Thursday, July 19 and Saturday, July 21 that includes everything from food and haircuts to bike repairs and counseling.

Stephen Tavani, the founder and CEO of WOW-International, said the event is needed in a country where poverty and violence effect millions.

“Right now we live in a society where 47 million people in our country are hungry.  We also live in a country that’s ripe with violence and there’s not a lot of togetherness,” said Tavani.  “Racism is on the rise.  (WOW-Jam) demonstrates in one four-hour session how all different people can get along.”

Tavani said that no matter what the weather looks like, the event will not be hindered.

“We never cancel,” said Tavani.  “Our feeling is, ‘they’ll shoot ya in the rain, they’ll sell drugs in the rain, Jesus can save ya in the rain.’  We’ve never canceled one in 21 years.”

The event will have live performances by Stephen and Linda Tavani.  Linda Tavani is better known as by her role as “Peaches” of the Grammy-award nominated group Peaches and Herb.

WOW-Jam takes place Thursday beginning at 4 p.m. and Saturday at 2 p.m. at Cornerstone City Church in Wayne
