Wooley's Weekly Winners 7-20-12

By: Ryan Wooley

After using last week as an all baseball weekly winner list, this week covers three different sports. As always, feel free to follow me on Twitter @WooleyMammoth85 and let me know whether you agree with my picks, or who you would add in their place.

Detroit Tigers

Before the All Star break the Tigers got on a roll by winning five in a row and have since continued that strong play by winning 11 of their last 13 games, pulling them within a half game of Chicago in the Central division.

We all have been waiting for a run like this because we knew they were better than they were playing after their 9 and 3 start, and they now are proving they may just be the team everyone expected them to be in the second half.

Penn State University

With the recent backlash whether the University should move or remove the Joe Paterno statue outside Beaver stadium, PSU president Rodney Erickson says he will make an announcement within 72 hours whether it will remain standing or be taken down.

Sure, there are a select few that believe it should be left alone to honor the late Joe Paterno, but the fact remains it is and will always be a constant reminder of the biggest cover up in the history of sports and needs to be removed.

Philadelphia Flyers

Unless you were on vacation and had no access to breaking news, you probably have heard about the Flyers rather large contract to the Predators Shea Weber, which was a whopping 14 year 110 million dollar deal!

It's no secret the Red Wings were one of the teams interested in bringing in Weber and were hoping to trade for him, but give the Flyers credit.

They made a move and offered a ridiculous offer that Nashville really has no choice but to match.

Does it suck that Detroit struck out again on a big name free agent? Of course. But in order to make a big splash, you have to make a move and the Wings were reluctant to pull the trigger while the Flyers were not.
