GM Recalls 38k Chevy Impala Police Cars

DETROIT (WWJ) - General Motors has issued a recall for more than 38,000 Chevrolet Impala police cars.

WWJ AutoBeat Reporter Jeff Gilbert said the issue only affects the police package of the Chevy Impala from the 2008 to 2012 model years.

The problem is with a front suspension part that is unique to the police package of the Impala said Gilbert.

GM said the lower front end can fracture and that could cause a driver to lose control of the car - particularly at high speeds.

Keith Crain Editor-in-Chief of Automotive News Magazine said General Motors is doing the right thing by recalling those police cars.

"There are always thousands of cars being recalled, it's prudent for General Motors when they discovered there was a crack in the lower control arm of police cars to recall them all for inspection," said Crain.

"My guess is they won't be replacing them all, but they will be inspecting them all," Crain added.

He said police departments will probably be able to get the problem taken care of at local dealerships.

GM said Impalas sold to the public have different parts in the suspension and will not be affected by the recall.

So far no injuries or crashes have been reported because of the problem.
