Hundreds Gather To Welcome Home Olympic Gold Medal Winner

CANTON (WWJ) - Hundreds gathered in Canton Township Tuesday to welcome home an Olympic hero.

Allison Schmitt said she never expected to win gold in the swimming competition but she returned home from the Olympics in London sporting five medals; three of them gold.

"I'm going to have time to relax," she told the crowd. "It'll be my first day to relax since (the Olympics) have been over. I don't know when it's going to sink in - it definitely hadn't sunk in when I stood up and heard the national anthem ... and it hasn't sunk in yet, so I don't know exactly when it will."

Schmitt said the Olympics were bittersweet as it will be the last time she will perform with her friend, who she said is like a brother, Michael Phelps.

Schmitt told the crowd that she was still on 'cloud nine' and stayed to greet and shake hands with all the folks gathered.
