Michigan Athletic Director Calls Pot Smoking Rumor ‘Ridiculous’
DETROIT (WWJ) - Were University of Michigan football players high the day of their well-publicized loss to Appalachian State in 2007?
A blogger claims an unnamed player told him several of his teammates partied late into the night on the eve of the game, then smoked marijuana right before kickoff. The player reportedly told Chat Sports it was an effort “see how bad we can beat ‘em up if we are stoned.”
University of Michigan Athletic Director David Brandon doesn’t put too much stock in the report.
“It’s an unattributed source and, believe me, if I worried about all of the inaccurate information that flew around the Internet from bloggers from unattributed sources, I wouldn’t have time to do my job,” Brandon told WWJ Newsradio 950’s Sandra McNeil. “So, I don’t know anything about it other than it sounds pretty ridiculous to me.”
Brandon said the players have so many scheduled activities before a game, it doesn’t seem possible.
“What I do know is what the pre-game regimen is of our team — they stay in a hotel, they have team meetings, they have coaches meetings, they have pre-game meals, they have trainers around them,” Brandon said. “The idea that there was any partying going on the day of the game I think is silly.”
Brandon made the comments Wednesday at a meeting of the Detroit Economic Club at Michigan Stadium.
