Secret Service Looking For Tips In U-Haul Theft

DETROIT (WWJ) - The U.S. Secret Service and police are looking for the public's help to catch a thief who made off with a U-Haul truck ahead of Vice President Biden's visit to Detroit.

The truck, that was loaded with high-tech security equipment that belongs to the Secret Service, was found Monday at Third and Bethune in the city's New Center area.

WWJ Newsradio 950's Rob Mason talked with Secret Service spokesman Ed Donovan who said the stolen truck was recovered around 11:30 a.m. in an apartment building parking lot near Henry Ford Hospital. Donovan said some, but not all of the equipment it contained has been recovered.

Donovan said the truck would be taken to a federal facility where agents and Detroit police will continue to investigate.

The vehicle was stolen Sunday morning from a parking lot of the Westin Book Cadillac hotel, on the 1000 block of Washington Boulevard, in downtown Detroit.

Authorities aren't saying exactly what the truck contained or the value, although reports said the equipment included metal detectors.

The person of interest, seen in the security camera images above, is a black male. He was wearing a green shirt and dark-colored shorts.

Anyone with information  is encouraged to call the DPD's Commercial Auto Theft at 313-596-2555 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.
