Beaumont Opens Center For Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery

ROYAL OAK -- Beaumont Health System has expanded its services with a new clinic offering minimally invasive surgical options for women who have gynecologic conditions, including  uterine fibroids or tumors, ovarian cysts, heavy menstrual bleeding, pelvic pain, urinary incontinence and pelvic floor relaxation.

Jay Fisher, M.D., director of the Center of Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery, leads a team of surgeons and support staff at the Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak based clinic.

"The expertise of our surgical team makes our clinic one of the most advanced centers to perform minimally invasive gynecologic surgery in Michigan," Fisher said. "Our GYN surgeons use laparoscopic and robotic-assisted techniques to perform delicate surgeries like hysterectomies and other complex cases that previously could only be performed through larger, open incisions."

Procedures are done through very small incisions -- often less than one-half inch in size -- allowing for less pain and blood loss, shorter hospital stay and quicker recovery time.

The Center for Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery also serves as a teaching site for other Beaumont surgeons to learn how to perform robotic surgery.

"Beaumont has an exceptional GYN staff," Fisher said. "We plan to collaborate with them and work with interventional radiologists, urologists and urogynecolgists to further expand our treatment options for patients through a multidisciplinary approach."

The clinic's staff includes four minimally invasive gynecology surgery specialists, a reproductive endocrinologist and a nurse navigator who assists patients with scheduling, testing, follow-up care and office procedures.

The Center for Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery is located in the Medical Office Building, suite 605 at Beaumont, Royal Oak. It is open Wednesdays from 1 to 5 p.m. Appointments can be made through the center by calling (248) 551-3575.

Hysterectomy, or the removal of the uterus, is one of the most common types of procedures women will have done at the center. It is the second most frequently performed surgical procedure in the U.S. for women, with approximately 600,000 hysterectomies done annually. Fisher and his team of experts are performing this procedure through three to four small incisions or a single incision in the belly button.

"Using the da Vinci robot, we are able to perform procedures with a high degree of precision, even in women who have large fibroid tumors. Women are left virtually scarless," Fisher said.

Beaumont's surgery department offers patients the latest minimally invasive technology and treatments, with care provided by highly trained physicians, nurses and technicians. Beaumont offers bariatric; cardiovascular; colon and rectal; ear, nose and throat; eye; gynecological; hand; neurosurgery; oral and maxillofacial; orthopedic; pediatric; plastic; thoracic; trauma; urological and vascular surgery. Beaumont, Royal Oak is one of the highest-volume surgery centers in the country.
