Final Beam Placed In Cobo Renovation

DETROIT (WWJ) The renovation of Cobo Center is taking shape with the final structural beam put in place Thursday morning.

As the skeleton takes shape, Cobo General Manager Thom Connors says the proof of progress is that it's drawing new business to the city. He said bookings are being scheduled into 2016 -- and beyond.

"We've had more inquiries the last two months than we have the entire two years we've been involved," Connors said. "Evidenced by the group having a conference during the construction, they want to be part of it. Bookings are picking up."

The atrium facing the Detroit River -- where the 12 and a half ton beam was placed 90 feet in the air -- is set to open in time for next January's Auto Show. Remaining phases will follow for the $320 million, three-year makeover meant to make the historic center more hospitable for all kinds of shows.

"It gives them the confidence that something's happening, there's a force, a strong workforce and srong leadership behind the project," Connors said.
