Michigan Muslims, Jews Plan Basketball Tournament

DEARBORN HEIGHTS, Mich. (AP) — A group of young Muslim and Jewish professionals in the Detroit area are staging in a basketball tournament as Israeli-Palestinian violence escalates in the Middle East.

The Michigan Muslim Community Council said Thursday that teams for Saturday's tournament at the HYPE Recreation Center in Dearborn Heights will be formed with a mixture of players from both communities. Men and women are invited.

Organizers say participants will be able to talk about business and "brainstorm about how we can work together for the betterment of Detroit." They aim to improve ties in the United States as Palestinians and Israeils trade rockets and airstrikes in Israel and Gaza Strip.

Southeast Michigan has significant Jewish and Muslim populations, and one of the largest communities of Arabs outside the Middle East.
