Barry Sanders remains one of the most enigmatic athletes in Detroit history.

Nobody doubts his ability or his greatness. And everybody knows that we will never see another player, in any sport, quite like Barry. But his retirement remains one of the great mysteries in Lions history. Was he trying to punish the Lions? Was he trying to make a statement against head coach Bobby Ross? Or was he simply tired of playing football?

NFL Films tackles this question and many others in their recently released documentary “Barry Sanders – A Football Life” which is part of a fantastic series of specials on the NFL Network. I talked with Paul Monusky, the producer of the Barry film and asked him all questions that Lions fans would have about the franchise’s all-time greatest player.
