Donald Byrd Legendary Jazz Trumpeter Dies At 80

SOUTHFIELD (AP) – Limited information is being released regarding funeral services for legendary jazz trumpeter and teacher Donald Byrd.

The Haley Funeral Directors in Southfield will handle the private services and no other information is being released.

Byrd died a week ago in Delaware at the age of 80. His nephew confirmed his death, but immediate family members remained silent.

Dr. Byrd performed for decades and produced numerous hits in many genres of music. He also considered himself a teacher of music, honing his talents early while attending Cass Tech in Detroit and later at Wayne State. He earned his master’s degree in music from the Manhattan School of Music.
