DETROIT (WWJ) – It appears that an old family fun center is being replaced by a much more mature form of entertainment along 8 Mile Road in Detroit.
WWJ’s Mike Campbell reports the defunct Michigan Fun Center, on the south side of 8 Mile Road just east of Mound Road, is being transformed into what looks to be a future strip club. If that’s the case, the adults-only establishment would be the 34th strip club in Detroit, by some accounts.
According to online sources, the building is being transformed into the “Spearmint Rhino” strip club chain, based out of Las Vegas. The adult entertainment chain operates venues nationwide and overseas in the United Kingdom and Australia.
If the rumors are true, the Spearmint Rhino would join other nationwide adult entertainment chains with venues with Detroit, such as Larry Flynt’s Hustler Club and the Penthouse Club.
But some Detroiters are saying it’s a bad move.
“Yes, we do have enough strip clubs. Enough is enough already,” one woman said.
“I don’t have a moral judgement, you know, one way or the other. I just think that the money people spend on that, you know, that disposable income can be put to much better use,” one man said.
“I don’t think we need any more, I mean there’s already a bunch all the way down 8 Mile alone,” one woman said.
“That’s too much trouble, I don’t go to them. But I don’t see what the problem is with them being there,” one man said.
Most Detroiters do agree, however, that strip clubs are legal businesses that have as much of as right as any other business to be here.
