Man Dies In 3-House Highland Park Fire

HIGHLAND PARK (WWJ) - What started as a single house fire in Highland Park stretched to two neighboring homes, and took the life of one resident.

Fire crews arrived quickly on the scene, Thursday afternoon, on Portage Street, near McNichols and Hamilton.

Vincent Tate, who lives across the street, said the fire started at the middle house and spread sideways to houses on either side of it. "My sister said it exploded, maybe a gas leak or something, but she said she heard it blow," he said.

Tate said one of the homes was vacant, but the other two were occupied.

WWJ Newsradio 950's Sandra McNeil said, all afternoon, about a dozen people were gathered outside one of the homes -- waiting to see if their loved-one died inside.

The body of a man, in his 50s, was found later in the evening.  His name was not immediately released.

The cause of fire is under investigation.
