CIMdata Publishes New Report on '3D Geometric Search'

ANN ARBOR -- The product lifecycle management consulting and research firm CIMdata Inc. Wednesday announced a new paper investigating the emerging technology of 3D geometric search.

Many new products are designed using the 3D models of existing products as a starting point. The emerging technology of 3D geometric search fits into a company's process best when the designer needs more than a text search to find a needed model. By quickly creating a 3D shape that embodies the most important aspects of the original model or models they seek, designers can perform a 3D geometric shape search and discover existing released models in the company's repository. More importantly, they can sometimes find associated simulation and manufacturing data for those models that closely match their search criteria. CIMdata has looked at the current product offerings for 3D geometric search and identified those aspects of a solution that industrial companies are advised to consider.

"3D Geometric Search" is part of the research performed for CIMdata's Social Product Development & Collaboration Knowledge Council. The Social Product Development & Collaboration Knowledge Council (SPD&C Council) represents the authoritative industry source for the architecture and implementation of social-driven and traditional digital product modeling and design collaboration technologies, and for their reconciliation in product engineering and manufacturing process planning. Numerous organizations, many of them among the world's largest manufacturing companies, and an extensive range of commercial solution providers, collaborate with us as equal partners to define an evolving social engineering framework for PLM.

Industrial companies, solution providers, and individuals can participate in the SPD&C Knowledge Council by contacting CIMdata.

"3D Geometric Search" is delivered directly to SPD&C Council participants.
