Poll: Should Guns Be Allowed In Schools?

LANSING (WWJ) - The Michigan Education Association is calling on state lawmakers to take up and pass legislation that would ban licensed gun holders from openly carrying guns in gun-free zones such as schools.

MEA President Steve Cook said something must be done to protect children from gun violence, such as the Sandy Hook, Connecticut shooting last December.

However, Cook said, "As both an educator and a gun owner, I say this, having more weapons in Michigan schools is not the answer."

Michigan House Democrat Andy Schor of Lansing is sponsoring the legislation. He said allowing openly armed civilians to roam school hallways is -- as he puts it -- a recipe for disaster.

"I think it can cause concern, if not panic, so my bill that I introduced is a reasonable gun control legislation that would close that loophole," Schor said.
