Almost Home Hosts Special 'Big Dog' Adoption Event Saturday

ROYAL OAK (WWJ) - Here's a great chance to adopt a dog for your family.

The Almost Home Animal Rescue League is hosting a Big Dog adoption event on Saturday, March 16, from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. at Pet Supplies Plus in Royal Oak. The event will feature large breed dogs of all shapes, sizes and colors that have been living in shelters for more than a year.

Gail Montgomery, founder of Almost Home -- a 100 percent no-kill rescue and haven for dogs and cats -- said many of the dogs are often overlooked by adopters because of the negative, aggressive stigma that follows bully breeds, such as the American Pit Bull Terrier and American Bull Dog.

"Our signature 'Big Dog' event gives potential adopters the chance to get to know many of our large dogs, some of which are bully breeds, and hopefully, take one home," said Montgomery. "Bullies are some of the most loving, people-oriented dogs you will ever know. What is promising is that educated animal lovers and many young adults don't believe the myths, and these people are some of the most staunch supporters and adopters of these animals."

Each of the dogs at the event will be available for adoption for $200. All of these pets have been spayed or neutered and are up to date with their shots.

Along with finding homes for these special dogs, the League is offering free micro-chipping to potential adopters, a silent auction and a special appearance by Brian Finn of Detroit Dog Trainer. Finn will also provide his training services, free of charge, to all dogs adopted at the event.
