2 Injured In Easter Morning Apartment Fire

LIVONIA (WWJ) - Two people were hurt in an Easter Sunday fire in Livonia.

Livonia police said at least two apartment units were severely damaged in the blaze that broke out early the morning at the Franklin Square Apartment complex on 5 Mile Road, east of Middlebelt..

Several residents were displaced, including Steve Rakowski, who spoke with WWJ Newsradio 950.

"I got woke up about 5:30 this morning ... my apartment was full of smoke. Livonia police knocked on my door wall telling me to get out,"  Rakowski said, adding that he will have to go and stay with his mother who lives nearby.

Fire officials said the two injured residents -- one of them a young girl-- were taken to a local hospital and then flown to University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor for treatment of burns.

Rakowski said that pair lived in the unit that initially caught fire. Their names have not been released.

Rakowski had nothing but praise for Livonia police and firefighters, who he said did an excellent job getting everyone out of the building.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
