Magic Johnson Helps Raise $200,000 In Saginaw

SAGINAW, Mich. (AP) — Magic Johnson has helped raise $200,000 for the Saginaw Promise Scholarship fund.

Johnson and hundreds of others attended the second annual Magic of a Promise fundraiser at Saginaw's Temple Theatre on Tuesday night.

MLive.com reports the former Michigan State and Los Angeles Lakers star donated $123,000 of his own money to the Promise scholarship fund, which will give qualifying Saginaw students money to attend college.

The state selected Saginaw in 2010 as one of 10 school districts in Michigan to become a Promise Zone district. It requires communities to raise their own money to provide qualifying students with scholarship cash.

Johnson has helped Saginaw schools raise money for the scholarship after partnering with the district last year.
