Detroit City Council Member Reveals Future Plans

DETROIT (WWJ) - There's been speculation that the recent absence of one Detroit City Council member is due to his frustration over the city's emergency manager situation. But, WWJ's City Beat Reporter Vickie Thomas says that's not why he's been AWOL.

Kwame Kenyatta has been on a medical leave for about two months, and he tells Thomas he's not sure if he'll be returning to the council table to finish out his term.

"Anything that takes you out for a length of time, somewhat, medication can be a problem, but I'm hoping that it's not serious and long-term, so I'm seeking second opinions and that kind of thing ... I'm in the process of doing that now," Kenyatta said. "Without getting too detailed about it, but let me just say, nothing life-threatening."

Kenyatta also told Thomas he's not seeking re-election and he plans to move out of Michigan. His new book, "For My People," will be released on June 8th with a signing event at the Detroit Seafood Market.
