Beaumont Opens New 'Green' Oncology Unit With Patient Comfort In Mind

Troy (CBS Detroit)- With the ever-rising number of cancer cases in metro Detroit, a new oncology unit has opened at Beaumont Hospital in Troy.

"The unit is designed to bring patients and caregivers together in a warm and comforting environment where patients can be provided with a comprehensive range of high quality cancer care and support services," says Eric Brown, M.D., director of Oncology Services and the Breast Care Center at Beaumont, Troy.

The new addition has many amenities, including adjustable temperature and lighting, built-in computers for bedside charting, and WiFi. There are also aspects focused on visitor comfort like private sleep rooms, a visitor pantry and physical therapy gym.

Besides cancer care, the new unit also provides hospital care, including pain and symptom control.

And it was built to be green. The furniture, flooring and plastic laminate are "Greenguard certified" for healthy indoor air quality. Recycled materials were used in the counter-tops, rubber wall, and flooring. The unit's lighting includes occupancy sensors, and natural light to minimize energy costs. Most of the signs, artwork, and furnishings were manufactured within 500 miles of the Troy campus.
