Reporting Terri Lee Sylvester
HOLLYWOOD (WWJ) – First-time director Tina Gordon Chism has a winner on her hands with “Peeples.” Chism, who wrote the screenplays for the hit films “Drumline” and “ATL”, both wrote and directed “Peeples”, a laugh-out-loud look at a well-to-do family headed by Virgil Peeples (David Alan Grier), a high-on-his-horse federal judge.
“Peeples” focuses on the relationship between Wade Walker (Craig Robinson) and his girlfriend of one year, Grace Peeples (Kerry Washington). It’s important for Grace, a lawyer, to please her father, so when it’s time for her to head to her family reunion at her parents’ home in upscale Sag Harbor, New York, she decides to leave Wade at home. Wade earns his living as a children’s entertainer, a profession Grace thinks her father won’t approve of.
Wade isn’t the least bit happy about being left behind, so he decides to surprise Grace by showing up at the reunion unannounced. And from the minute Virgil sets his sights on Wade, his goal is to make Wade’s visit not the least bit comfortable.
At first glance, Wade and Grace appear to be an odd couple. She’s ambitious and beautiful, while he’s average-looking and a bit unsure of himself and his chosen profession. But, it does become clear that this couple is in love and their love is something they’re prepared to fight for.
If you like to laugh and have a good time, you’ll definitely enjoy “Peeples.” It makes for a good time at the movies, and it’ll definitely have you laughing.
“Peeples” also stars S. Epatha Merkerson (Daphne Peeples), Tyler Williams of “Everybody Hates Chris” (Simon Peeples), Melvin Van Peebles (Grandpa Peeples), Diahann Carroll (Nana Peeples) and Malcolm Barrett (Chris Walker), along with Kali Hawk (Gloria Peeples), Ana Gasteyer (Mayor Hodge) and Kimrie Lewis-Davis (Meg).
See you at the movies!
