New Face Of College Savings In Michigan

SOUTHFIELD (WWJ) - She's the new face of college savings in Michigan.

Twelve-year-old Madison Farrell of Macomb Township, a seventh grader at Iroquois Middle School in the Chippewa Valley Schools, is the grand prize winner of Metro Parent's Cover Kids Contest. Madison's mother Jennifer Farrell says she saw the contest information and asked her daughter if she wanted to enter.

"It goes up to 12 years old and you're 12 so this would be the only time you could enter. And she said sure. She loves getting her picture taken," said Farrell.

And what does Madison get as the contest winner?

"She gets a $1,529 college savings plan from the MESP, that will go toward her college. She also is the June cover girl for Metro Parent Magazine. She did a photo shoot for them. And then she is also going to be in a commercial and a print ad for the Michigan Education Savings Plan."

Farrell says the $1,529 MESP plan will be a big help for the family, since they haven't started saving yet for Madison's college. They do have a plan started for her older brother, who is 16.

Is Madison thinking about a career in modeling now?

"She loves getting her picture taken," Farrell said. "We might. I'm not sure. But she sure enjoyed making the commercial and doing the photo shoot with Metro Parent Magazine."

Madison is thinking about attending Michigan State University, but she hasn't made up her mind yet. The MESP commercial is scheduled to start airing on May 29.
