Splash Park To Open In Detroit Next Month

DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - A splash park is coming to a Detroit neighborhood that lost its pool two years ago to the work of vandals.

Palmer Park residents should have a new place to beat the heat by the middle of August. Construction began earlier this month.

The park's pool was closed summers ago after vandals removed parts of the mechanical infrastructure.

Neighborhood resident Rick Johnson said the community is excited to have a new place for children to play.

"A lot of kids counted on that pool," he told the Detroit Free Press. "When it closed two years ago, there wasn't anywhere for them to go."

The Palmer Park Splash Park is funded by auto supplier Lear and is part of the Southfield-based company's 10-year, $5 million pledge to support the city's revitalization efforts.
