Teen Enters Plea In Videotaped High School Beating

HARTLAND TWP. (WWJ/AP) - A 14-year-old girl charged in juvenile court with an attack on a fellow Michigan high school student that was recorded on video and posted online has accepted a plea deal.

The girl faces an Aug. 23 hearing where she could be ordered held or placed on probation.

The girl initially was charged with aggravated assault in the March 12 altercation at Hartland High School, about 40 miles northwest of Detroit. Livingston County Prosecutor Bill Vailliencourt said the girl entered a guilty plea instead to assault and battery.

A video of the incident shows one female student arguing with another before grabbing her from behind by the hair, pulling her to the ground and punching her before an adult breaks up the attack. The victim, also 14-years-old, reportedly suffered a broken nose and concussion in the attack.

Bezotte said the girls started arguing in the classroom when the victim "made fun" of a personal situation the suspect was discussing with another friend. He said the argument escalated into violence when the girls got into the hallway.

"The victim overheard the conversation and made fun of the situation, which was offensive to the suspect," Bezotte told The Livingston County Daily Press & Argus.

A third student who noticed the girls fighting took out his cell phone and recorded the incident before later posting the footage online. Police however didn't seek charges against that student.
