ANN ARBOR (WWJ) — Lutgarde Raskin, professor of environmental engineering at the University of Michigan, has received the Altarum Institute/ERIM Russell O’Neal Endowed Professorship.
This endowed professorship is one of the highest honors that the university’s College of Engineering can award to a faculty member.
The endowed chair position was made possible through a 2003 gift from the nonprofit Altarum Institute, formerly the Environmental Research Institute of Michigan. The chair was named for former ERIM/Altarum Trustee Emeritus, Russell D. O’Neal, in recognition of his extraordinary commitment to building Altarum, and ERIM before it. Altarum Institute is a nonprofit health systems research and consulting organization.
In recognition of receiving the professorship, Professor Raskin will be giving a lecture Wednesday, Sept. 4 at 4 p.m. in the Johnson Rooms at Lurie Engineering Center. The topic is “Optimizing Biofiltration for Drinking Water Treatment: The Role of Microbial Ecology,” which will focus on how research in environmental biotechnology can contribute to making more sustainable processes in the urban water cycle.
The College of Engineering’s Dean Munson, Associate Dean of the Rackham School of Graduate Studies Nancy Love, and Kim Hayes, Chair of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, will be making remarks during the ceremony.
Endowed professorships are reserved for scholars of national and often international stature who have earned a highly distinguished record of teaching, researching, and publishing.
“Altarum is proud to see this professorship awarded for only the second time in our 60 year history,” said Jim Lee, senior vice-president, who will also be in attendance. “Professor Raskin’s research has the potential to positively affect the health and well-being of large population areas and we look forward to her research.”
The lecture will be available to watch online at http://tinyurl.com/lutgarde and is being promoted via the Civil and Environment Engineering (CEE) Twitter (@umceefa) and Facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/UMCEEFA).
