Detroit Teen Dies While Swimming In UP

MARQUETTE TOWNSHIP (AP) - Police say a 19-year-old Detroit man has died after having difficulty swimming in Lake Superior off Michigan's Upper Peninsula.

State police say Kenny Rubbet was swimming about 3 p.m. Sunday with three other young people near Little Presque Isle in Marquette County's Marquette Township when he wasn't able to reach the island. The others weren't able to help him because of rough water conditions.

Rubbet was found in the water by the sheriff's department dive team. Police say he was taken to a hospital, where efforts to revive him were unsuccessful.

Police tell The Mining Journal of Marquette that Rubbet was about to enter the military and was in the Marquette area visiting the two women students at Northern Michigan University.
