"Baggage Claim" Features Paula Patton In A Familiar Role

HOLLYWOOD (WWJ) – While watching the new movie "Baggage Claim," I couldn't help but think of the 1998 film "How Stella Got Her Groove Back" starring Angela Bassett and Taye Diggs, and 2011's "Jumping the Broom" also starring Bassett, and a host of others, including Paula Patton, the star of "Baggage Claim."

Why? Well, even though the story lines are different, there are similarities. For example, there's an airport scene in "Baggage Claim" that reminded me so much of the pivotal airport scene in "Stella." And Patton's character in "Baggage Claim" is very similar to her character in "Jumping the Broom," where she starred as Sabrina Watson, a young woman from a wealthy family who is about to get married to a handsome young man from "the other side of town."

In "Baggage Claim," written, produced and directed by David E. Talbert, Patton stars as flight attendant Montana Moore who has 30 days to find Mr. Right. She and her two best friends devise a plan where Montana "just happens" to run into a long list of her eligible ex-boyfriends, among whom she hopes to find "the one."

While I found all three movies enjoyable, after the beginning scenes in "Baggage Claim" featuring Patton and Boris Kodjoe (ladies, you know why!!!), there wasn't much to keep my attention until about midway through the film when there's what turns out to be a "surprise" scene with Patton and Derek Luke, who stars as William Wright, Montana's best friend since childhood.

With a long list of audience favorites, which also includes Tia Mowry, Jill Scott, Taye Diggs, Rickey Smiley, Trey Songz, Lauren London – and even Ned Beatty – "Baggage Claim" is sure to draw movie-goers to theaters. But don't go expecting to see anything earth-shattering. Because instead, you'll find something closer to the tried-and-true.

See you at the movies!
