Man Falls Through Ice Coming To Aid Of Boy, Both Recovering

SHELBY TOWNSHIP (WWJ) - A game of ice hockey takes a dangerous turn when an adult and child fall through the ice.

Shelby Township Police say two young boys were playing on the ice near the Crystal Lake Apartments -- north of 23 Mile off of Dequindre.

One of them, an 11 year old, fell through, into the frigid water. A neighbor saw what happened and ran out to help -- but then he fell through the ice.

The man was able to pull himself and the boy to safety. The boy was taken to the hospital as a precaution and is expected to be okay.

The DNR has some winter safety tips if you are planning on being on or around a frozen lake ... first make sure you know the thickness of the ice.

What if someone else falls in?

If someone else falls through and you are the only one around to help? First, call 911 for help. There is a good chance someone near you may be carrying a cell phone.

Rescue of victim who's gone through the ice ...

Resist the urge to run up to the edge of the hole. This would most likely result in two victims in the water. Also, do not risk your life to attempt to save a pet or other animal.
