1 Dead After House Fire In Farmington Hills

FARMINGTON HILLS (WWJ) - Police say a man was killed when fire ripped through his home in Farmington Hills.

Fire broke out around 10 p.m. Monday at a home in the 28000 block of 10 Mile Road, in between Inkster and Middlebelt roads.

Officials confirmed a man was killed in the fire. His identity was not immediately released. Authorities are awaiting autopsy results to determine an exact cause of death.

Investigators were back at the home early Tuesday morning, but remained tight-lipped. Reporting live from the scene, WWJ's Vickie Thomas said the home's interior appears to have suffered significant damage in the fire.

Joanne Johnson, who  lives next door to the victim's home, said a relative who came to check on her neighbor made the tragic discovery.

"Smoke just came barreling out of the door, the garage door, and her husband came running over to me and I called 911 and then it was just a couple of minutes until they were here, the police and fire department," she said. "They couldn't save him, they couldn't even get down there to him, he was in the basement. "

Johnson said the victim, who she described as in his 50's, had only been living in the area since the spring.

A cause of the fire remains under investigation.
