Mich. Legislature Returns After Monthlong Break

LANSING (AP) - Michigan lawmakers are returning to Lansing for a new year of work after a monthlong break.

Wednesday is the start of the 2014 session in the Legislature. No recorded votes are planned this week.

The Senate's first action is expected to be approving a resolution commemorating the 25th anniversary of the North American International Auto Show.

Legislators on budget committees will meet Friday to receive consensus revenue projections. A surplus is expected, and lawmakers are looking to enact tax relief this election year.

Legislation that could see movement in coming months include easing phone companies' ability to transition away from traditional land lines, cracking down on scrap metal theft and ranking schools with A-F letter grades.

Many bills also could win passage during the lame-duck session after the November election.
