Police Call Off Hunt For Gunman, Suspect Young Victim Shot Himself

FARMINGTON HILLS (WWJ) - Police have suspended a manhunt in Farmington Hills after the victim's story didn't add up.

Officers were searching Tuesday for a gunman after an 18-year-old man was shot at apartment complex at the Hunters Ridge Apartments and Townhomes, a gated community along 14 Mile, just west of Orchard Lake Road.

Officers arriving at the scene early Tuesday morning were told by the victim that he knew the shooter and that the shooter had already fled in a vehicle.

Some Bloomfield Hills schools in the area were put into "secure mode" as the victim, who police say was not a student, was rushed to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

West Bloomfield police officers were aiding in the search for the suspect who authorities described as armed and dangerous.

Police later said, in a statement, that an investigation revealed the victim's story was inconsistent with some of the evidence discovered at the scene.  Therefore, police ceased their search and were exploring the possibility that the victim may have accidentally shot himself on the way to work.

The victim was in surgery Tuesday afternoon. His name has not been released.

 An investigation is ongoing.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Farmington Hills Police Department at 248- 871-2610.
