Troy Creates 'Do Not Knock' Registry To Keep Pesky Solicitors At Bay

TROY (WWJ) - Tired of people you don't know showing up at your door, trying to sell you something or get a donation? One local community is doing something to put a stop to those annoying solicitors that go door-to-door.

There is now a "Do Not Knock" Registry in Troy where residents can sign up to avoid those unwanted solicitors, according to city clerk Aileen Bittner.

"It establishes a list that residents can sign their addresses up on," Bittner told WWJ's Beth Fisher. "That list is given to any solicitors that are licensed by the city of Troy. It's basically a list of addresses that are off-limits for solicitors."

Registration just opened and Bittner said over 600 people have already signed up.

"It's becoming quite popular and we've had lots of questions and lots of people are curious about what it is, but I think even more people are thankful that we're doing something like this just to prevent a lot of those knocks on your door late at night when you don't know who is supposed to be there, especially when you're not expecting anyone," she said.

Bittner said complaints about solicitors typically tend to increase around the spring time, when the weather starts to get warmer.

"During the winter months they can only go until 6 o'clock and then during the summer it's until 8 o'clock," she said. "Personally, I don't like having someone come to my door, you know, at almost 9 o'clock at night, asking if I want an estimate on my roof or something like that."
