Man In Wheelchair Killed In Hit-And-Run With Semi

DETROIT (WWJ) - Police are searching for a semi-truck driver who fatally struck a man in a wheelchair as he was crossing a street on Detroit's west side.

The accident happened around 4 a.m. Tuesday at the intersection of West Grand Boulevard and Grand River Avenue, near I-96.

Police on the scene told WWJ's Mike Campbell a semi-truck hit the man while apparently turning through the intersection.

Brandon James said he saw the whole thing unfold.

"I was at that gas station and I seen him in the street," James said. "He was in his chair, either crossing or just standing, and he got run over by the big semi and the semi kept going."

James said from his perspective, it looked like the semi-truck made an illegal turn from Grand Boulevard onto Grand River.

"In my head, [the driver] seen him because you can't turn at that light right there and he turned at that light," he said.

The man, believed to be in his 30s, was declared dead at the scene.

"His name is Anthony, but we call him legs," James said. "Just a neighborhood guy, he'd be at all the stores."

Police are searching for dark-colored, possibly burgundy semi-truck with shipping crates on the back.
