4-Year-Old Child Ejected From Car Survives; 5 Others Hospitalized
COMMERCE TWP. (WWJ) - Police say a 4-year-old child who was ejected from the back seat of a vehicle during a head-on crash in Oakland County is recovering at the hospital.
The accident happened around 6 p.m. Wednesday on Benstein Road and Glen Iris Drive, near Oakley Park Road in Commerce Township.
According to police, a Dodge Stratus was traveling south on Benstein Road when the driver, a 33-year-old from West Bloomfield, lost control of the vehicle and struck a Nissan that was traveling northbound.
Police said the Stratus was occupied by four children under the age of 10. A 4-year-old who was sitting in the back seat was ejected from the vehicle.
The ejected child and the driver of the Stratus were taken to Royal Oak Beaumont Hospital, while the other children were transported to Botsford Hospital in Farmington Hills. All are listed in stable condition.
The driver of the Nissan, a 58-year-old Commerce Township resident, was transported to Huron Valley Hospital with minor injuries.
Police said it appears as though the children in the back seat of the Stratus were not wearing seatbelts or child restraint device at the time of the crash.
Alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the crash, police said, which remains under investigation.
