CBS DETROIT - Mae Worthy, the grandmother of former Michigan State Spartan and current Green Bay Packer Jerel Worthy, has died from a gunshot wound to the head after her husband of 50 years, James, accidentally shot her Wednesday night.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported Mae's death Friday. James had been handling a gun when it went off. Mae was in another room when she was hit.

"It went through the bedroom wall, down into the opposite end of the house and it just happened to strike her while she was sitting on the couch," Huber Heights police Lt. Matt Dulaney said, according to ESPN.

"The evidence is in line with his story as to what he's telling us," Dulaney continued. "(Detectives and evidence crews) have done a thorough investigation and the preliminary investigation reveals that it does appear that it is an accidental shooting."

Jerel posted on his Twitter about the accident.

Mae was 70 years old.
